A gothic fantasy
castle wedding

Forget everything you thought you knew about weddings. This isn’t your typical white dress and pastel blooms affair. Welcome to a darkly enchanting gothic fantasy filled with sweeping medieval drama, dark romance, and outfits fit for royalty.

If you crave wedding inspiration that dares to be different, this shoot will transport you straight into a real-life fairytale. It’s where gothic fantasy and castle wedding dreams collide in the most unforgettable way.

Set within the ancient stone walls of  Ruthin Castle in North Wales, the venue’s medieval architecture and dramatic spaces create the perfect backdrop for this dark fairytale. It weaves rich texture and timeless romance throughout the entire story.

Say I Do Fantasy Castle Wedding Style

The heart of this shoot was undoubtedly the celebrant-led ceremony, brought to life by the incredible Lottie Moon Celebrant. She designed a powerful handfasting ritual, complete with a ceremonial dagger (yes, really!). For an added touch of fantasy, the rings were presented balanced on a sword.

Jemma Bowers  provided a stunning selection of handmade wedding and engagement rings. These included a vintage-inspired diamond-encrusted engagement ring, simple gold bands, and more intricate carved or hammered styles. Each piece brought its own unique character and craftsmanship, making them perfect for a gothic fantasy ceremony set within ancient castle walls.

The atmosphere was emotional, romantic, and full of joyful moments. There were smiles, laughter, and even a few happy tears.

Alessandra of Arielinblue told us “I was very impressed by the ceremony that Lottie wrote for this photoshoot and all the credit goes to her. It had medieval and fantasy elements, it was very romantic and our models were smiling, laughing and getting emotional during the whole time of the ceremony.”

The ceremony also featured some truly magical details. For instance, bespoke vow books from Caboodle Wedding were designed with romantic, old-world paintings on their covers. These echoed Renaissance and fairytale art, tying in perfectly with both the gothic styling and castle wedding setting.

To set the scene, She’s Electric Events styled the ceremony space with a dramatic draped backdrop. Floor standing florals bursting with deep reds and greens by Flourish Flowers were set either side. Candles in hurricane vases added a soft glow, creating a moody, magical setting that felt lifted straight from a gothic fairytale.

Dark Romance & Fantasy Details

Feasting gothic style

She’s Electric Events continued the rich, textured look using the same fabric from the ceremony backdrop on the wedding breakfast tables. Each table featured a carefully curated mix of vintage books, pillar candles, and dramatic floral centrepieces by Flourish Flowers. The arrangements burst with deep burgundy tones, striped red and white roses, red and white carnations, anthuriums, and orchids. Taper candles in gold holders added height and glow, enhancing the romantic, old-world aesthetic.

To complete the look, gold beaded charger plates brought a hint of medieval luxury to each setting. While, Caboodle Wedding‘s handmade stationery added the perfect final touch. The Cake: Edible Dark Art

Let’s talk about that cake. A total gothic fantasy masterpiece by Mel’s Amazing Cakes. This towering creation looked like it completely belonged at a candlelit feast at a grand castle wedding. It featured deep black icing, ornate gold detailing, and rich floral artwork framed on each tier. It gave serious dark fairytale vibes. Finished with dramatic sugar flowers in moody tones, it was more than just dessert – it was edible art.

Fantasy florals

Flourish Flowers worked absolute magic across the whole castle wedding setup. As well as dressing the ceremony space and wedding breakfast tables with those rich, dramatic blooms, they created a stunning bouquet for April. With a compact shape and a dreamy mix of burgundy and green tones, it had its own romantic presence. Featuring anthuriums, roses, orchids, and trailing amaranthus for soft, flowing movement, it was the perfect balance of bold and beautiful.

Gothic Elegance on Paper

Alessandra of Arielinblue tells us: “I wanted stationery that could be from a different time and could stand along like a piece of art. Lorraine Burt from Caboodle Wedding is my favourite stationer and she created an invitation suite where the envelope had a medieval engraving of Ruthin castle, which is the actual place where we did the photoshoot.”

We always say that the stationery you send to your guests helps them understand the vibe of your wedding day. Any guest who received these invites would get the style loud and clear. The beautiful soft torn-edged invites have gothic-style script. The old-world imagery seen on the vow books and menus is echoed across the invitation sleeve. Burgundy ribbons finished the designs and complemented the colour scheme.

Gothic Fantasy Wedding Outfits Fit for a Castle

The styling for April and Tom was an easy decision…

“I had a very specific idea of the look I wanted for our models because they remind me a little of Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo (from Game of Thrones), so once April and Tom agreed to participate I knew I wanted a black dress for April, braided hairstyles and a bespoke outfit for Tom. I wanted jewellery & shoes that were fit for royalty.” says Alessandra of Arielinblue

April's Gothic Queen Look

April’s “Daenerys Targaryen” gothic fantasy look was brought to life with a jaw-dropping black gown. Legend Bridal crafted the dress from a mix of laces sewn over layers of tulle on nude satin. This revealed the stunning velvet ribbon lines on the bodice and the intricate beaded lacework.

For footwear, House of Elliot’s black lace Victorian boots were the perfect match. They couldn’t have been more on point for the gothic styling.

To complete the look, April wore a one-of-a-kind twig crown from The Lucky Sixpence. Crafted from upcycled green gems sourced from pre-loved jewellery, it added a Game of Thrones meets Lord of the Rings vibe. Custom clip-on earrings echoed the crown’s colours and shapes, tying the whole ensemble together beautifully.

Warlord Romance: Tom’s Fantasy Style

Tom’s “Khal Drogo” look was equally striking. It was custom-made by Beyond the Veil and featured a rich burgundy shirt with ruffled cuffs and layered sleeves for added fantasy flair. His rose-patterned waistcoat added a darkly romantic twist. The handmade britches included a double-breasted button fly (yes, proper historical details!), and were worn with long socks for that authentic fantasy wedding feel. He looked like he had stepped straight out of a medieval love story- with just the right edge of rock ‘n’ roll.

Gothic Glamour & Fantasy Braids

Hair and makeup were the final touches that pulled together the gothic fantasy castle wedding look. Every detail complemented the dramatic outfits and moody styling.

LSP Bridal Hair created intricate, Viking-inspired braids for both April and Tom. These styles balanced historic charm with wedding day glamour, adding texture and depth to their looks. April’s braids added a soft yet powerful edge to her fairytale styling, while Tom’s gave his appearance a rugged, warrior-like feel.

Meanwhile, makeup by The Glam Group added just the right dose of drama. April’s look stayed fresh and romantic, with soft lips and a bold, dark eye that tied in beautifully with her gothic gown. Tom mirrored this energy with his own striking eyeliner, giving off full-on fantasy wedding vibes and capturing the essence of his Khal Drogo-inspired look.

Dark Elegance perfectly captured

Alessandra of Arielinblue, along with second shooter Ritchie Jones, captured the entire shoot with breathtaking artistry. Her style is known for being whimsical, free-spirited, and deeply romantic – perfect for telling modern fairytales like this one.

With her lens, Alessandra beautifully captured the gothic elegance and ethereal charm. Her photos highlighted the dramatic lighting, rich textures, and moody castle backdrops. As a result, every image feels like a moment pulled straight from a dark fantasy romance.

One of the standout elements of her work is her use of double exposure. We especially love the layered image of Lottie Moon Celebrant – it adds a dreamlike quality that fits the story perfectly.

Behind the scenes, Love Story Lens was on hand to capture video content. Their creative footage gave a glimpse into the magic of the day as it unfolded, showing the emotion, laughter, and incredible teamwork that brought this gothic fantasy vision to life.
