dark & moody

Here’s what Becky from Foxglove & Black told us about this modern Gothic wedding shoot:

“A lot of couples contact me requesting a gothic themed wedding but wanting it to still look classy and romantic. They want to reflect their love of all things dark & moody but they don’t want it to look like a tacky Halloween party – and there’s no reason why it should! There are so many ways to have a dark and sophisticated wedding theme! For this shoot, we incorporated many timeless gothic elements such as tarot cards, pentagram signs, a black dress and of course, LOTS of skulls! We gave it a modern twist with a Til’ Death neon sign, contemporary stationery and the vibe of the venue.”

gothic chapel
wedding venue

The Globe At Hay in Hay-on-Wye was the perfect venue for this shoot, being a beautiful converted methodist chapel dating back to 1752. With its mix of modern furnishings and historical features such as high ceilings, large windows and an original pulpit, it was the ideal backdrop for the mood required.

The celebrant was Helen of Wild Peach Ceremonies who created a sacred circle and performed a handfasting perfect for the Pagan nature of the shoot. This made for a more personal ceremony.

Dearest Love Photography photographed the day beautifully capturing every single detail of the shoot.

styling

Foxglove & Black absolutely smashed it with the gothic wedding styling. Here’s how Becky described her work:

“For the styling, I used my Til’ Death neon sign hanging from a mesh panel with minimal floral arrangements to create a modern look. This was kept consistent with a mesh cake stand and table plan. I used vintage glass tealights and Victorian poison bottles for bud vases, to work alongside the historical character of the venue. Lots of church candles were added to the ceremony area for that ultimate romantic feel.”

Gothic Florals

“No Gothic wedding is complete without a skull or two, so these were used as table decor and even in the floral arrangements that I created. I wanted to be minimal with the flowers to give a contemporary and simplistic feel, so the table centrepiece was kept low and sitting in a modern black frame holder. I used fresh flowers in deep & moody colours with touches of light pink to stand out. I used a mixture of ethically sourced skulls & antlers in the bouquet, button hole, glass domes and also as part of the table plan design. I love to make unique pieces to complement the theme and so created pentagram signs with hanging flowers against the windows for extra detail.”

Nicola of Nicola Honey Artistry was the makeup artist & hair stylist for this shoot. She created a dark gothic look but with more of a contemporary feel, by adding in warm tones on the eyes and super fresh ‘barely there makeup’ on the skin. This was teamed with a more informal tousled updo for the hair which showed off the gorgeous handmade crystal crown made by Howling Moon

Zoe of Scarlet Tayla provided the beautiful black wedding dress, made with velvet and tulle with lace appliques and crossover thin straps. Creations By Miss Molly provided the shoes, which laced up the leg and were customised with red roses, a pentagram symbol and the words ‘Til death’. Model Ellie also wore a black leather jacket with an embroidered tarot card design.

details

This modern Gothic wedding has gorgeous, consistent details throughout, meaning everything fits together seamlessly.

The stationery, also by Foxglove & Black was kept modern, drawing on a minimal design, but was made to look like the different tarot cards of ‘The Lover’s’, ‘The Emperor’ and ‘The Magician’ to name but a few. Each card represented a different table for the wedding breakfast and was attached to a mesh panel with a skull centrepiece & flowers for a creative table plan.

The cake was created by Hayley of Seven Crows and was a complete showstopper! There was so much detail with a pentagram motif, sugar flowers skulls. Hayley also provided skull favours which were made entirely of chocolate!
