Here’s what Elizabeth from Bridal Reloved York told us about this styled shoot:
“Not wanting to miss out on all the enjoyment of the York Viking Festival, we decided to host our very own modern-day Viking inspired wedding! York Wedding Suppliers, a group of local independent businesses, came together to create this shoot to celebrate the customs and traditions of a traditional Viking wedding. We wanted to show how many aspects of a Viking wedding could be incorporated into a modern day wedding.
We were also lucky enough to have a beautiful wolf dog, Turbo, to join us – he was so beautiful and well behaved!”
natural
wedding styling
“Viking weddings typically took place outdoors, so we picked Deighton Lodge as a beautiful, rustic barn venue surrounded by plenty of open space. Although due to the -4 degree weather on the day of the shoot, we mostly shot in their gorgeous barn space.
Similar to today’s weddings, no Viking celebration would be complete without a grand feast. The wedding feast, or “brullaup,” as it was known, was a joyous gathering of friends and family. Typically served was roasted meats, fresh fruits, and of course – barrels of mead! The revelry continued with music, dancing, and storytelling to continue the party well into the night.
We prepared a lavish banquet table, styled by Perfect Venue Dressing Yorkshire and Essential Extras, with rustic pieces such as large candlesticks and wooden items. Viking wedding invitations and stationery were designed by Herve Jones Designs, also using the rustic red and natural theme.
Flowers by Lottie Roberts Flowers included daisies which are traditional in Viking weddings and plenty of foliage and branches to keep everything natural.
The viking wedding cake was created by Appletree Cakery, with textured, burnt orange icing and foliage weaving around it.”
viking inspired
wedding ceremony
“We recreated many of the viking traditions in our ceremony. Here to Eternity Ceremonies lead the hand-fasting ceremony (from which the term ‘Tying The Knot’ comes from), and Melody Diamond Celebrant lead the exchange of vows. We also had the traditional toast of meed, of course!
After the ceremony, Adrian Salamon Magician entertained the couple with his magic tricks – what perfect wedding entertainment for an ancient or modern wedding!”

vintage
wedding wear
“The bride Hannah wore a vintage chiffon dress with statement sleeves from Bridal Reloved York. The groom Ash and groomsmen wore beautiful tweed suits from Master Debonair York – keeping the colours natural and rustic yet modern. They were paired with wine coloured paisley waistcoats as red is often used by people of wealth in viking weddings. The bride and groom both wore vintage furs to add to the Viking style.
Both bride and groom had their hair braided by Braids By Olivia and The York Barbering Co. Makeup, by Eleanor Jayne Makeup Artistry, consisted of dark smoky eyes and a natural feel. The bridesmaid wore an earthy terracotta wrap dress and her hair was kept long and natural with one simple braid. Handmade accessories were provided by Bunny Loves Evie, including metal floral headbands and beaded earrings.”
