Ethereal Nature Wedding – Warrior King & Queen

This neo-pagan inspired nature wedding shoot is earthy, ethereal and downright gorgeous! The shoot was inspired by the local history of the area, goddess symbolism and a reverence for nature. It also nods to the styling/makeup of the series ‘Britannia’ and it’s warrior Queens. Nicki Komorowski Photography worked with a team of awesome wedding suppliers at Great Betley Farmhouse to create these magical images. Nicki told us all about the influences behind the shoot and gave some fab advice about recreating a wedding like this.

Nature Wedding – Goddess Symbolism & Local Mythology

With the fields of Great Betley Farmhouse commanding a view of Chanctonbury Ring, the theme of this nature wedding shoot was always going to be associated with ritual and paganism. The ring is thought to date back to the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age. No one knows exactly what it was constructed for, but it could have filled a variety of roles, including a defensive position, a cattle enclosure or even a religious shrine. It was abandoned until the Roman Invasion when two temples were built within the Ring, to which deity/deities, nobody knows. However, it has long been the source of local legends. It has a supposed mystical power, and it has been said that it can increase a woman’s fertility if she sleeps under its trees for one night.

The Triple Goddess

This is why the Triple Goddess symbol features in some parts of our shoot, with the link to the area and the power it may/may not have over a woman’s fertility. As a deity or deity archetype, The Triple Goddess is revered in many neopagan religious and spiritual traditions. It’s an embodiment of three figures being united in one: the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone. This symbolises both separate stages in the female life cycle and the cycle of the moon (which can rule one of the realms of heavens, earth and the underworld). The link to our bride should be clear; she is a young woman getting married. Using the weapons, like the bow and arrow and swords are another physical representation of the strength of these figures. A Warrior King and a Warrior Queen. Equal.

Creating A Nature Wedding

The focal point of the nature wedding ceremony was the circular willow sculpture. Just Peachy Florists used locally foraged flowers to keep with the idea of worshipping nature and the world around us. The stationery has been created by an eco-conscious calligrapher (Wedding Calligraphy by Rachel) which is another reason why we had a vegan graze platter (Bay Tree Foods), to show respect of animals. We see the Triple Goddess symbolism in the wedding cake by Cakes In Bloom and bridal jewellery by Sam Ryde Jewellery. Details such as bundled herbs, the crystal and lavender favours, the lavender chandeliers and the floating candle were all chosen to reflect the spirituality behind the shoot.

A Warrior King And Queen

The colour scheme was built around the silk of the bride’s dress, by The Robing Room. This inspired the bridal headpiece by Daisy Chain Lane. Lara James Make Up channelled the looks created in the tv drama ‘Britannia’ – Honey, our bride looks, beautiful but fierce. The braided hairstyle by Tea and Trim again emulates the tv series, with the subtle blue to show that our bride is more of an individual. The warrior stance of both the bride and the groom, with the weapons supplied by our groom Johnny, represents how strong and confident the ancient Britons are deemed to be.
