How to nail a
colourful wedding
So, you’ve decided that you want a colourful wedding, but how do you absolutely nail the delivery of it?
Our recent editorial shoot captured all the ingredients of a perfect colourful wedding, from funky decor to vibrant wedding wear, including unique florals and the ‘pink-est’ dress we’ve ever seen!
We were super excited when the brilliant Grace (they/she) and Spencer (they/them) agreed to join us! Their infectious, bubbly energy (plus the fact that they’re totally in love) really made the shoot special.
This blog post is full of top advice from some of the best alternative wedding suppliers in the business – we just know you’re going to love it!

OUR SECRET INGREDIENTS
Find Your unique Wedding Venue
Choose an epic alternative wedding venue which gets YOU! We chose The Shack Revolution in Hereford for this editorial because this blank canvas wedding venue is just perfect with its brick walls, bold black & white stripes and black industrial metal accents. The perfect backdrop for a colourful wedding!
Accessorise!
How about getting your wedding jewellery custom-made to perfectly match your wedding colours and attire like these pieces from Amber Cooper Green Artist. This doesn’t have to be expensive, as you can purchase exciting contemporary jewellery from small businesses at an affordable price and obtain something you love and would wear time and time again. Small business TICK! Re-use TICK!
fun wedding stationery
Your stationery is the first glimpse your guests get into your wedding vibe. Make those save the dates and invitations pop with colour to set the tone of your day. We love this funky pink and orange stationery set by I Like Pens Studio.
Florals are a great place to begin when deciding on your colour palette, and tying flowers and stationery together always works beautifully. Don’t forget your on the day stationery too, carrying your colour palette across to signage and table decor keeps everything looking amazing.
Dried Flowers can be colourful too!
We love that dried and preserved flowers can come in all sorts of surprising colours throughout the seasons. You can even get bold colours like teal that aren’t available with fresh flowers.
So don’t hold back! Ask your floral designer to go bold and don’t be afraid to accessorise with headpieces (like the one pictured above from Petalhead Flowers) and oversized floral bouquets. The great thing about headpieces is that they can be re-used in the future as well!
You can have statement floral pieces made which can be reused throughout your wedding day – this is a really simple way to ensure your styling is consistent throughout.
It's all about the dress
A round of applause please for this vibrant pink tulle alternative wedding dress from Ryley & Flynn! We matched it with a striking metallic pink jumpsuit, both custom designed and made to celebrate the fun of a colourful wedding!
If you don’t want a full-on pink dress, then just add some colour pops here and there, maybe some flashes of colour in your skirt layers or bright and colourful socks and shoe laces.
If you’re feeling a bit bolder you could use a coloured overskirt which you can take off later in the day to give two different looks. Don’t be afraid to mix textures and shades – maybe pair tulle with metallic fabric or faux/vegan pleather, or glittery/shimmer fabric with colourful cottons or linen fabrics.
You can use colours that compliment each other for a more subtle look or if you’re feeling really adventurous then pick bold contrasting colours like bright orange with pink!

alternative wedding Hair & Makeup
Don’t you dare let anybody else tell you how you should/shouldn’t look on your wedding day! Your wedding makeup, should you choose to wear it, is all about self-expression – why not rock a bright eye or bold lip? MUA Cecile Llewelyn-Bowen created two iconic makeup looks for this shoot.
Big Hair Energy pulled the look together with incredible hair styling that stayed true to the models’ style and personality.
Go Big On The Confetti
Photographer Kirsty Rockett Photography recommends going CRAZY on the confetti! And we mean crazy. When you think you have enough, buy more! This colourful mix was from Proper Confetti.
Smoke bombs are also great for pops of colour. Just make sure that your venue allows them first and make sure you know how to use them safely!
Cake!
We are partial to a slice of cake here at Unconventional Wedding HQ, and we love that they come in so many different shapes and sizes.
So whether you opt for a single tier accented with colourful flowers (like this one from Mandy’s Home Bakery), or a five tier sky scraper, make sure you talk to your wedding cake designer about matching the colours to your wedding day.
colourful wedding styling
How do you style your colourful wedding day? We stuck to our bright colour palette and coordinated with
– Coloured glassware, glass candle holders and gold cutlery from Stylish Weddings UK
– Matching bows from The Embroidered Napkin Company
– We also sourced ourselves coloured candle sticks and napkins.
bring the FUN
We LOVE wedding photobooths here at UW, but imagine if your photobooth had a games arcade as well! Let us introduce the Mobile Retro Arcade from Fletchers Mobile Arcade – what an awesome addition to your evening wedding entertainment.
Personalise with your own props (cowboy hats and feather boas were the favourites for this shoot) and request your favourite video games.
And, yes – the photobooth does include over three hundred rubber duckies that are stuck to the wall! Talk about a unique photo backdrop!
