When it comes to your big day, finding the perfect wedding hair style is just as important as choosing your dress. A great hair stylist not only helps you look incredible but ensures you feel confident, comfortable, and true to yourself. Wedding hair specialist Lindsey from ‘Oh You Pretty Things’ shares her top advice for finding the right stylist, preparing for your big day, and nailing your dream look.
find your wedding hair stylist
There are so many wedding suppliers out there. How do you know which stylist is right for you? Oh You Pretty Things has advice for that!
“Your wedding hair stylist should feel on the same wavelength as you and be as excited and passionate about your vision and ideas as you are.
Search the internet for bridal hair stylists in your region. Some bridal hair stylists may be able to travel too, so it may be worth searching further a field to find the right person.
You can get a great feel from a stylists website and Instagram profile as to their style, the products they use and personality. Don’t be afraid to reach out to them with any queries you may have, this is also a great way to see if they will be right for you too!”
Top Tip!
It is recommended to start looking for a wedding hair stylist 9-12 months before your wedding day, to ensure availability.
the consultation
This is your chance to connect with your stylist and share your vision. Don’t be afraid to speak to a few different suppliers and see who you like best. Here’s some advice from Oh You Pretty Things:
“Your consultation call is a perfect time to say hello and have a really good chat about your vision, ideas, inspo photos and get expert guidance on any queries or concerns you have.
A great wedding hair stylist will be knowledgeable, passionate and excited to hear all about your style and ideas. They should be able to give you a vision of the process leading up to and on your wedding day and all the costs expected.”
Remember to ask about bridesmaids’ hair, or anyone else in your party’s hair if this is something you’re interested in.
Top Tip!
Remember – Always be sure to read reviews before booking a wedding supplier! Personality aside, you need somebody punctual, communicative and reliable.
wedding hair trial
Your wedding hair trial is where the magic starts to take shape. Oh You Pretty Things continues:
“Here is where you can see how your ideas come together and, most importantly, how your chosen styles actually feel on you. You may be surprised and end up wanting something entirely different!
This is also the perfect time to get to know your stylist. They will be another friendly face on your ceremony morning, so it’s important that you are comfortable with them.
Ideally, you will have already chosen your dress so we can try shapes and styles to match the style and the neckline. Also, take with you any earrings, head pieces, veils you may have to see how it all works and to look at placements together.
Although it is not essential, you may also want to book a trial for your bridal party, friends and family hair. It may be that a chat with your stylist is all they need to talk over their desired style and any worries they may have.”
Top Tip!
Don’t skip your hair trial! Keep your hair in after the appointment to see how it feels and looks over a longer period of time.
on the big day
Your hair stylist will give you a good idea of the time needed so that you can coordinate this with other elements of your wedding morning. If you have a wedding planner, they will liaise with the stylist. Oh You Pretty Things gave us the lowdown:
“Your hair stylist will arrive a little early to set up ready to begin for your agreed start time. They will slot right in with the vibe of your morning and will help you feel like your most gorgeous self.
You ideally want the whole wedding party to be hair and makeup ready at least an hour before you are due to leave. This gives you time to relax, take photos and get into your outfit within plenty of time. Time is definitely your friend on your wedding morning so try to prepare as much as you possibly can prior to your ceremony morning.
Like your other wedding suppliers, a hair stylist will care about you and have your back on the day. They will feel so privileged to be a part of your day and will do whatever they can to help your day run smoothly.”
unique wedding hair
Perhaps your wedding hair ideas don’t quite match the ‘conventional styles’. Fear not! Oh You Pretty Things says:
“If you cannot feel like an absolute rock star on your wedding morning, when can you? Your style should be as natural or as bold as YOU want it to be. If you feel like your true self, you will be at your happiest and most vibrant.
If there is a unique or alternative wedding hair style that you would like – speak to your stylist about it. Even if there is not a similar style in their portfolio, get in touch with them to check out if it is something they would like to do… it may be that it’s a new style they would absolutely love to master and style for you.
If you think you don’t have the hair for that dream style you’d love, you may be surprised to find out that with the right technique and product you do! Hair extensions can also be a great option, they look incredibly natural and can really boost the wow factor.”
In Summary:
Whatever you want to do, be you and don’t be afraid to communicate every detail of your vision and vibe – the best hair stylist for you will love it too!
