Creating A Labyrinth Themed Wedding
This Labyrinth themed wedding shoot has been styled around the ballroom scene from the 80s cult classic film βJim Hensonβs Labyrinthβ starring David Bowie. It features work by a fantastic group of alternative wedding suppliers who also happen to be massive Labyrinth fans.
It took place at Derby wedding venue βThe Old Bell Hotelβ which is Derbyβs oldest coaching inn dating back to 1650 and is grade II listed. It’s stunning regency ballroom matched the theme perfectly. The concept behind the shoot was not to recreate the scene exactly but to take it as inspiration, and create work that could be used in a real wedding rather than a film set.
Although the concept of having a movie themed wedding is pretty unconventional, the ballroom scene itself actually pushed the usually alternative vendors down some more conventional paths with a blush pink and cream colour scheme and lots of candelabras and crystals. However, their unique & quirky creativity didnβt disappoint and they created a really unique look by going fantastically over the top. The phrase βitβs so extraβ was bandied about quite a lot on the day.
The day was captured by Emma from Doodah Photography, and Videography by Nina Emily Photo & Film. We captured the romantic, fantasy feel of the movie with real story-telling element throughout. Check out the epic video below:
Labyrinth Themed Wedding Styling
Bethan from Finishing Flourishes styled the wedding venue including the flowers, transforming the space in just a couple of hours. She created bespoke pieces such as the goblin flower urn and the clock with 13 hours on it. She went the extraΒ mile needed to make this Labyrinth themed wedding spectacular.Β
Beccy from Smith Street Bakers created the stunning fairytale-esque, 3-tier wedding cake. We love the regal gold detailing and added flourishes made from isomalt (a sugar substitute).Β
Stationery was by Doodah Designs, and features lots of elements from the Labyrinth film including the barn owl, masks, hanging pearls and the crystal orbs. The colour scheme was chosen to match the venue styling with some regency ornaments thrown in for good measure. Throughout the shoot the team definitely went for the βmore is moreβ approach.
A Whimsical Wedding Ceremony With An Owl!
The celebrant, Ceremonies by Leni Robson, loves dressing up and loves a theme so was only too happy to source an outfit for herself that fitted the style of the shoot. She came up with several bespoke elements for the ceremony including the smoking loving cup. She also made vow booklets for our couple.
The star of the show was our lovely ring-bearing owl Juliette. We really wanted a barn owl to feature as there is one in the film which is particularly iconic. She and her eagle owl friend Elvis definitely stole the limelight on the day of the shoot! The birds were particularly well behaved in the grand regency ballroom and completely unfazed by all the fuss. Bird On The Hand offer all sorts of options for including birds of prey on your special day and are guaranteed to delight and entertain your guests.
Spectacular Labyrinth Themed Wedding Wear
ZoΓ« from Scarlet Tayla made this incredible wedding dress and groomβs jacket from scratch! The outfits for our two models really evoked the 80s vibe of the costume in the film without being an exact replica. Hours of work went into the beading and corsetry and both outfits were an immaculate fit on our couple.
All the accessories were handmade especially for this shoot. Jewellery and hair accessories were by silversmith and sculptor Claire from CRZyBest. She really explored the theme of βbeing inside a bubbleβ with all the gorgeous crystals in her work. Lou from Inanna Bespoke Shoes created some really elegant and unique hand painted shoes with bead and crystal detailing. Ani Stafford of Townsend Millinery handcrafted two goblin masks together with a tricorn hat.
Laura from Victory Rolls Bridal Hair went all out with beautiful raven extensions to bring Sarahβs 80s bouffant do bang up to date to suit a more modern bride. And a massive shout out to makeup by Laurie Scott who came to our rescue with only 2 hours notice when our previous MUA couldnβt attend. Her work is truly stunning.
