An Intimate Alternative Wedding in Cornwall:
The Lovers
Some love stories feel bigger than a single lifetime.
Inspired by the idea of two souls finding each other again and again, photographer Katie J Photography brought together a team of alternative wedding creatives to create The Lovers. Set at Scorrier House, the editorial combined intimate moments with rich, romantic styling, all centred around one simple promise: In Every Lifetime.
Katie explains:
“The Lovers is a dark romance styled elopement centred around the idea of love transcending a single lifetime. While ’til death has become a common phrase in alternative wedding styling, I wanted to explore something that felt even more romantic.”

Alternative Wedding Morning
Boudoir Lingerie
Katie told us:
“Everyone should enjoy their wedding morning, and be a little indulgent with getting ready. Draw those moments out! The day is over with so quickly.”
That philosophy shaped the opening images for this intimate alternative wedding. Shell Belle Couture provided three handcrafted lingerie looks in black and burgundy, chosen to complement the editorial’s rich colour palette.The boudoir images became an important part of the story, rather than simply another part of getting ready.
Coordinating Accessories
The Lucky Sixpence provided two handcrafted accessory looks for Jasmine, each carefully coordinated with the couture lingerie. A pearl headband was paired with the black and burgundy lingerie, while an Art Deco-inspired crown complemented the embroidered two-piece set and robe. Matching Deco earrings tied both looks together.
Hair & Makeup
Caroline Ruddock Bridal Hairstylist styled Jasmine’s hair into glossy Hollywood waves, creating a look that echoed the timeless romance behind The Lovers. Najat Myers paired it with softly defined eyes, a striking burgundy lip and flawless, luminous skin. Together, they completed a look that felt both glamorous and effortlessly wearable.

Black Wedding Wear
Jasmine wore an elegant black April Banbury gown from Coastal Bridal with a bespoke black veil by Anna D’Souza Designs. The Lucky Sixpence‘s Art Deco crown was layered with a rhinestone halo for extra height. Simple pearl drops replaced the Deco earrings, while a coordinating Deco necklace completed the look.
The sweeping train, flowing veil and layered headpieces gave the look plenty of drama against the elegant interiors of Scorrier House.
“The dramatic length of the veil looked amazing for the outdoor portraits, as well as stunning pulled over the face for bridal portraits.”

Smart Tailoring
Dale wore a three-piece suit from Cornwall Suit Room, finished with a pocket watch and fresh boutonnière. Smart tailoring brought its own character, showing that classic menswear sits comfortably alongside an alternative wedding aesthetic.
A Celebration of Independent Makers
Throughout The Lovers, every handcrafted detail was chosen with intention. From couture lingerie and bespoke accessories to handmade jewellery and stationery, the editorial celebrated the craftsmanship of independent wedding businesses.
“The lingerie, the accessories, rings, veil, and the stationery – they all really helped elevate not only the luxurious feeling I was hoping to create, but also highlight the beauty of investing in handcrafted pieces from independent makers (with the bonus of being more eco-conscious) but also of having it be far more personal than generic mass-produced items.”
A Ceremony for the lovers
The ceremony brought together many of the ideas behind this intimate alternative wedding. A handfasting, handwritten love letters and bespoke details created a celebration that felt deeply personal while keeping the focus on the couple.
Katie chose Marie-Claire of Willow and Wild Weddings to perform the ceremony after working with her on a previous shoot.
“I really liked her warm fun energy, as well as general easy going and spirited approach to being a wedding celebrant.”
Handwritten Love Letters
Gathered Calligraphy created the stationery suite, including the handwritten love letters exchanged during the ceremony. The idea came from a conversation about what stationery an intimate elopement might actually include.
Katie told us:
“We had a conversation around what stationery you would have for an elopement. From that came the idea of handwritten vows/love letters, to be read to each other in the ceremony.”
Handmade using richly textured cardstock, ribbon and lace, the stationery echoed the thoughtful details found throughout the editorial.
Handmade Wedding Rings
Stephanie Stevens Jewellery supplied the handmade wedding bands exchanged during the ceremony. Known for creating bespoke engagement and wedding rings, each piece is designed and handcrafted from the first sketch through to the finished ring.
Alternative Wedding Venue Styling
Ceremony Styling
Jen from Blossom & Bow Styling immediately understood Katie’s vision, even producing an AI mock-up that perfectly captured the ceremony space before the shoot took place. On the day, she transformed Scorrier House with rich burgundy florals, candlelight, luxurious textiles and carefully chosen details, creating a romantic backdrop for the handfasting ceremony.
Gathered Calligraphy completed the setting with an elegant ‘In Every Lifetime’ sign, carrying the central theme of the editorial into the ceremony space.
Wedding Breakfast Table
Jen from Blossom & Bow Styling carried the rich burgundy palette through to the wedding breakfast, styling the table with flowing drapes, abundant florals and candlelight. Set beneath the greenery of the glasshouse, the intimate tablescape invited the couple to pause and savour the moment.
Gathered Calligraphy‘s handmade stationery continued the story with ‘The Lovers’ table sign, handwritten place cards and menus, each created using richly textured card and ribbon to echo the luxurious feel of the styling.
A grazing table by Grazers Cornwall became the centrepiece of the table, offering a relaxed and intimate alternative to a formal wedding breakfast.
Wedding Day details
Alternative Wedding Cake
The Lovers first took shape during a conversation between Katie and Amber of Amber’s Cakery, who shared a love of rich, romantic styling and alternative weddings. Amber created a real burgundy heart-shaped cake, finished with cherries and the words ‘In Every Lifetime‘, tying the central theme of the editorial into one final detail.
After the photographs were finished, the cake was shared by the team before everyone headed home.
Alternative Wedding Music
Charlie Clough Piano performed live throughout the shoot, including an intimate first dance to instrumental versions of alternative favourites.
Katie told us:
“The idea of an intimate first dance with alternative music was just perfect. Luckily he was more than happy to be involved, and we had the pleasure of working and photographing to piano versions of My Chemical Romance, Foo Fighters and more.”

Portraits at Scorrier House
Scorrier House in Cornwall provided the perfect setting for the intimate alternative wedding, offering grand interiors alongside intimate spaces that suited the concept and dramatic styling.
Katie told us:
” Scorrier House was a perfect backdrop for this concept with grand hall, staircase, orangery and grounds, but not so big it wouldn’t work for an elopement too. Very grateful that Ollie was helpful and happy to host our photoshoot day.”
The grand staircase became one of Katie’s favourite locations. Draped with burgundy fabric and lined with hurricane candles by Blossom & Bow, it provided a dramatic setting for Jasmine’s entrance in her black gown before the couple explored the grounds for romantic portraits.
Alongside Katie J Photography Katie runs Garnet Studio, where she specialises in boudoir and fitness portraiture. She also offers wedding content creation through Katie J Content, capturing behind-the-scenes moments alongside her photography. Although the brands remain separate, the same thoughtful approach to photographing people runs through both.

“I like to describe my style as sitting somewhere between documentary and editorial. I adore capturing candid, unscripted moments as they unfold, while also providing gentle direction to create beautiful, wall-worthy portraits. My aim is to create the kind of images that become your favourite photos of yourself, while preserving the genuine moments, connection, and emotion that make them meaningful.”
