Sustainable Boho Wedding - The Ethos
Thinking of the environment when planning a wedding is becoming more and more important. Many couples now want to reduce the impact their wedding will have on the environment. But, at the same time, they don’t want to compromise on the aesthetic of their special day.
The idea behind this sustainable boho wedding shoot was to showcase what you can do to create an amazingly different and personal day whilst being as eco-friendly as possible. The suppliers I chose to work with me on this shoot all have a similar ethos to Willow And Rust, which is important when trying to create a sustainable event.
I wanted everything we used to fit into one of three categories, it was either reclaimed, reused or could be reused afterward, or recycled/recyclable. There was also no plastic used. I wanted to show a zero-waste, plastic-free, sustainable wedding with no compromise on aesthetics.
Sustainable Boho Wedding Styling At Overgrown Acres in Nottinghamshire
As a planner and stylist, I tend to specialise in more intimate outdoor weddings. By their very nature this type of wedding is already more sustainable than a bigger event in a large indoor venue. Smaller weddings, intimate and micro weddings are becoming more and more popular, this has been made more so due to the pandemic, but I think this will continue long after everything is back to normal.
The venue for this sustainable boho wedding was the beautiful Overgrown Acres in Nottinghamshire. While they are a Tipi venue, I wanted to make the most of their outdoor spaces for this shoot.
The colour palette was soft pastel shades with elements of rattan and earthenware ceramics to add warmth and texture. The whole look was very much about texture with the dried flowers and macramé pieces adding to the layering.
Stylish AND Good For The Planet!
For this sustainable boho wedding, The floral designer used dried and silk flowers which could be reused again afterward. She used wire and hand-tied them rather than using plastic foam. The dress was from a small company that hand make all of their gowns to order and have a strong ethical stance. Made from natural, ethically sourced fabrics, the separate top and skirt could both be worn again separately after the event. The groom’s suit was borrowed from a local wedding hire boutique and the model wore his own shirt and shoes.
The props were sourced from local vintage and second-hand shops and what I couldn’t find there, I managed to borrow. I think using preloved items wherever possible in all aspects of life is a must to reduce waste, and there are so many beautiful things out there just waiting to be given a new lease of life.
Sustainable Boho Wedding Details (& A Furry Friend!)
The food for the grazing table and the ingredients for the wedding cake were all locally sourced and the cake was minimally decorated with dried flowers. The grazing table then made an amazing lunch for all involved when the shoot was done, so nothing went to waste!
The wedding stationery, sourced from a small local business, was printed on recycled seed paper which could be planted after the event and left to grow into beautiful wildflowers to serve as a reminder of the day.
As well as our models, we had a lovely addition to the wedding party in the form of our fury friend Rosie, she lives at Overgrown Acres and very much enjoyed being part of the day! I love the growing trend of dogs at weddings!
